I'm really excited by the launch of "Little People" at Eyestorm. Below is an extract from Angie's blog on the Eyestorm website...

"Today we’re launching six brand new exclusive prints from our very own genius draftsman Mark Hayward’s ‘Little People’ series. Read on to find out if he’s made a mini you...
I’m not going to talk about how much I love Mark Hayward’s work for too long, as you regulars will have heard it all before. This new series of prints however, which are launching exclusively with Eyestorm today, really are pretty cool.

Mark’s ‘Little People’ are in my opinion one of the artist’s strongest bodies of works to date, and the new prints – small in scale and affordable enough to collect – see Mark create little policemen, little firemen, little soldiers and little train drivers amongst other recognisable stereotypical characters, continuing his exploration of child-like figures contrasting with the responsible jobs they hold.

Rather like a children's cartoon with adult references that go straight over the kids' heads, with this series Mark homes in on our child within as we make nostalgic associations with the imagery he creates. I'm pretty certain I had a red chopper with tassels on the handle bars and most definitely stabilisers as seen in Little Bike while growing up in the 80's; those younger than me may relate more to Little Police that sees the classic 'Cosy Coupe' car, traditionally in yellow and red, turned into an official police vehicle.

The best thing about these works for me is that they remind me not to take life too seriously, and that we all start off the same, as kids playing games in a world of fantasy. The question is has much changed since then? I sometimes wonder…"

Sandstorm 2012 acrylic on paper - 76 cm x 95 cm. Still a few minor tweaks to the final composition but I think it's nearly there. I'm looking forward to showing it at the Affordable Art Fair Battersea next month - come along to see the finished piece.
I am really excited about this piece as it's a good mix of all the themes I have been working on lately - Military, Fairground and Childhood. I have been asked recently about how these seemingly disparate themes work together and I see them as all coming from a very similar place. They all have strong actions and situations that define the characters very simply whilst the characters themselves get to be quite innocent and relaxed. I've tried to approach serious subject matter not with a lighthearted or flippant attitude but with an aim to finding some sense of humour or some personality that we can all relate to.  I think that when you mix them together, as in this latest piece it really shows the similarity of mood that has been there throughout. My Friday thought for the week!

Double Take opened at Studio 3 Gallery last week in
the University of Kent's new arts building. The show
comprises a selection of works from the Royal
College of Art archive, some dating as far back 1930
others as recent as 2011 and including Air-Raid from
Mark's graduation show in 2009. The show has been
selected and curated by students of the university of
Kent under the guidance of Gallery Curator Ben
Thomas...

‘Some works on display will challenge assumptions
about prints through their scale, use of materials or
through technique. The subordinate status of the print
to other art forms is contested, bringing printmaking
into play with painting, photography and digital design
and animation,’

Double Take will be running until May and is
well worth a visit with a great selection of work
on show.

Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm
16 January – 14 May 2012
